Maintaining Your Air Conditioning System

Blog

Your heating and air conditioning is an important part of your comfort throughout the year. You need your air conditioning unit for those long, hot summer days and your heating system for the cold winter nights. Replacing a part of your heating and cooling system can be a very pricey project, and in most cases, the problem could have been fixed well before major damage was done. A little maintenance can go a very long way when it comes to your air conditioning unit. Here are a few different things that you can do as a homeowner that will help you keep the air conditioning functioning properly.

Air Ducts

One aspect of your air conditioning system that is most likely overlooked is the air duct system. You likely have not thought about the air ducts in your home. However, the air ducts are a vital part of the system. Over time, debris such as dust and mold, which are very common allergens, can start to build up in the air duct system. When this occurs, the air conditioning unit has to work much harder to push air through the home. This puts a lot of stress and strain on the air conditioning unit and can cause it to break down faster. Also, the extra strain on the unit may cause the unit to burn more fuel, raising your energy bills.

Air Compressor

The air compressor is one of the main reasons that your home even has air, and it is often forgot about. The air compressor will be located outside your home, and it needs to be taken care of properly. Often the compressor will be on a cement slab, but it is usually encroached with vegetation. Cut back all vegetation from the unit and open it up to clear out all debris. Once the debris is cleared, check the unit to be level. There are coils in the unit and coolant flows in the coil. If the unit is not completely level, then the coolant will not flow through the coils properly. So, if the unit is not level, level it.

Technician

Large problems with an air conditioning unit can cost a small fortune, so it is better to hire a technician at the end of each year to look at your air conditioning system. The technician will then perform all of the small maintenance issues. The small fixes that occur at the end of a season will ensure that no big problems happen later.

Shopping For A New HVAC System

After my sister moved into my house with me, she started complaining about the temperature. I had never really thought about it before, or maybe I was just used to it, but my house was pretty cold. She told me that she didn't think the furnace was working properly, so I started checking things out on my own. Sure enough, my furnace seemed to be having some serious problems. I started looking for a replacement, and I was able to find a great furnace for much less than what I initially thought I would need to spend. I wanted to make this blog for anyone out there who might need to shop for a new HVAC system. Check out these great articles for information you might need.
